The EMG Nexus Dialogue on Investing in Natural Infrastructure, held on 7 June 2022, explored how nature-based and natural infrastructure solutions can support sustainable development, strengthen resilience and help address the triple planetary crisis.
The Dialogue built on the EMG’s earlier work on sustainable infrastructure and focused in particular on the role of natural infrastructure in delivering social, economic and environmental benefits. Participants discussed opportunities to integrate natural infrastructure into national planning and investment, as well as the challenges that can limit implementation, including financing constraints, institutional capacity and policy coherence.
The discussion also examined innovative financing approaches and the role of multilateral development banks, governments and other partners in scaling up investment in natural infrastructure. Particular attention was given to how such investments could contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, climate resilience and more sustainable infrastructure systems.
The Dialogue contributed to the EMG Consultative Process on Sustainable Infrastructure and aimed to identify practical financing and policy options, strengthen implementation of the International Good Practice Principles for Sustainable Infrastructure, and support more coordinated UN system action on nature-based infrastructure solutions.
