United Nations Environment Programme
The EMG, in collaboration with UNEP's Sustainable Infrastructure Partnership, convened a Nexus Dialogue on 26 February 2019 to explore how integrated approaches to infrastructure planning and development could accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Bringing together experts from across the UN system, international organizations, academia and other partners, the dialogue examined the environmental, social and economic implications of infrastructure investment. Discussions highlighted the critical role of sustainable and resilient infrastructure in supporting inclusive economic growth, poverty reduction, climate resilience and human wellbeing, while recognizing the significant environmental and social risks associated with poorly planned infrastructure development.
Participants emphasized the importance of integrating sustainability considerations throughout the entire infrastructure lifecycle, from initial planning and design to financing, construction and operation. Key priorities included strengthening environmental and social safeguards, promoting nature-based solutions, improving cross-sectoral coordination, and ensuring inclusive stakeholder participation. The dialogue also explored opportunities to incorporate the value of natural ecosystems and social considerations into infrastructure investment and financing decisions.
The dialogue resulted in a joint outcome statement calling for stronger cooperation and integrated approaches to sustainable infrastructure development. Participants expressed their commitment to advancing knowledge-sharing, capacity-building and the application of common planning tools, guidelines and standards. The statement also encouraged the EMG to strengthen UN system-wide collaboration in support of infrastructure that is environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive and resilient to future risks.
