The EMG Nexus Dialogue on Sustainable Nitrogen Management was held on 20 April 2023 in Geneva to explore how the UN system could strengthen cooperation on the sustainable use and management of nitrogen. The Dialogue brought together UN entities to consider both the production and pollution dimensions of nitrogen use, including nitrogen-use efficiency in agriculture, pollution of air, water and land, and the need for more coherent policy responses.
Through plenary and small-group discussions, participants identified opportunities to improve nitrogen efficiency, reduce emissions and pollution, strengthen waste and wastewater management, and enhance policy coherence. The Dialogue also considered possible follow-up through existing UN processes, including the UN Common Approaches on Biodiversity and Pollution and the Global Biodiversity Framework.
