The EMG Consultative Process on Sustainable Infrastructure was established in 2020 to strengthen coordination across the UN system in supporting Member States to integrate sustainability into infrastructure planning and investment.

A key outcome of the process was the development and endorsement of the International Good Practice Principles for Sustainable Infrastructure, led by UNEP with input from EMG members. The Principles provide a UN-wide framework for integrating environmental, social and economic sustainability throughout the infrastructure life cycle. They were subsequently referenced in UNEA Resolution 5/9 on Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure, which encouraged Member States and other stakeholders to consider their integration into national policies.

The process then turned to practical implementation, including work on sustainable infrastructure tools, barriers to implementation and investment in natural infrastructure. This included a country-level barrier analysis undertaken with Chile and an EMG Nexus Dialogue examining policy and financing approaches for scaling up investment in natural infrastructure.
