Biodiversity

The EMG Issue Management Group (IMG) on Biodiversity was established in 2021 to support implementation of the UN Common Approach to Biodiversity.

Formally endorsed by the UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) in 2021, the Common Approach provides a shared framework for collective UN action on biodiversity. It helps the UN system work more coherently in support of Member States’ implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, while contributing to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Common Approach promotes stronger collaboration across the UN system, greater awareness of the risks posed by biodiversity loss, and more integrated action at global, regional and national levels.

The IMG supports implementation of the Common Approach through three main areas of work:

1. Raising awareness and sharing knowledge

The IMG promotes understanding of the Common Approach, the Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. It facilitates the exchange of knowledge and information across UN entities and provides access to practical tools and guidance.

2. Strengthening interagency cooperation

The IMG provides a platform for UN entities to coordinate their biodiversity-related work, align policies and programmes with the Common Approach, and identify opportunities for joint action in support of Member States.

3. Monitoring and reporting on UN biodiversity action

The IMG monitors implementation of the Common Approach and supports global-level reporting on biodiversity-related action across the UN system, helping to identify progress, gaps and areas requiring further attention.

The IMG is co-chaired by UNDP and UNEP and brings together 43 EMG member entities.
