Biodiversity in the context of Human Security and Wellbeing

The EMG, in cooperation with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and with support from the Government of Switzerland, convened a Nexus Dialogue on Biodiversity and Human Security on 2–3 May 2018 in Geneva. The dialogue explored the vital role of biodiversity in supporting human security and wellbeing, and opportunities to strengthen its integration into policies and practices across sectors.

Human Rights and the Environment

The EMG, in collaboration with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), organized a three-part Nexus Dialogue series on Human Rights and the Environment to strengthen understanding of the human right to a healthy environment and promote more coherent, rights-based environmental action across the UN system.

Food System Resilience Through Integrated Natural Resource Management

The EMG, in collaboration with UNU-FLORES, organized the Nexus Dialogue on Food System Resilience through Integrated Natural Resource Management (INRM) on 7 June 2021 as an independent dialogue of the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit. The event explored how a more integrated approach to managing land, water, biodiversity and other natural resources could help build more resilient and sustainable food systems.

Sustainable Bioeconomy

The sustainable bioeconomy is gaining growing recognition as a vital pathway to addressing interconnected global challenges and driving transformative change across sectors. In this context, the Environment Management Group (EMG) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) co-organized a two-part Nexus Dialogue series on Sustainable Bioeconomy.

Common approach to integrating biodiversity and nature-based solutions for sustainable development into the United Nations policy and programme planning and delivery

The Common Approach to Biodiversity is the UN system’s shared framework for making biodiversity a consideration across the work of the whole UN system, with each organization contributing through its own mandate. The Common Approach was endorsed in 2021 by the UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination and developed through the High-level Committee on Programmes.

Advancing the biodiversity agenda: A UN – system wide contribution

This report presents why biodiversity matters to sectors, and how the different policy sectors can help maintain biodiversity and ecosystem services. A joint statement by the UN system serves to illustrate that opportunities for improved mainstreaming exist, and that public institutions, such as the UN, can help set the framework conditions for actions by the private sector, households and individuals to act.The report was made available as an information document for the COP of the CBD in Nagoya in 2010.
